This week another two innocent lives were taken by the severe acts of bullying. One being a 11- year old disabled boy, Mitchell.
Mitchell Wilson, was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 9. Last November Wilson was jumped and mugged by a 12- year old boy from his school. The older boy stole his iPhone, and had smashed Wilson into the pavement leaving him with broken teeth. Police charged the older boy with aggravated assault and robbery. His trial was coming up on Sept. 28 and Wilson was served with a subpoena and it was wearing down on him. On September 6, Mitchell Wilson’s father, Craig found the lifeless body of his 11-year old son in his bed with a plastic bag tied around his head.
Another teen was found dead not to long after the death of Mitchell Wilson. Christopher Howell of Hamilton killed himself two days after Mitchell due to many years of being bullied.
These tragic incidents are not just happening every once in a while, suicides as a result from children and teenagers being bullied is a serious issue that is happening more and more. Yes the media does cover some of these incidents, but what about all of the teens and children who commit suicide and are not reported on? Like all of the teenagers who are being bullied and ARE committing suicide because of their sexual orientation? Last fall 4 teen boys all killed themselves because they were being bullied because they were gay. That was reported on because it seemed to be a prevalent pattern occurring around that time. But there are probably countless people who are committing suicide because of bullying, if not there are people who are highly depressed and are considering it. The media needs to pick up on this; they represent a strong voice of the public that can help change things, like putting stronger rules and regulations in place to fight severe bullying.
Don’t get me wrong, there are many children and teenagers who are ashamed of being bullied and do not want to ask for help because they are embarrassed of how people like their parents will seem them. These are the children that nobody will ever suspect who are being bullied, until it is too late.
